This is the mama cow in the story about Franklin and the calf.
Here is Jake (left), Tucker (middle), and Mark (right) at Susie & Will's pool.
This is one of the large remodeling windows from the inside view.
These three photos didn't get printed with the original text for some reason so they'll seem out of place. But hey, you're getting something.

A Cow, A Calf and a Barn

The third photo down show the new window opening we've put into the old 'barn' that we're remodeling. You know, the 600 sq./ft. building we used to live in with two ranbuntious boys. The 'barn' that I named 'barn' so my husband wouldn't forget that it wasn't our permenant dwelling place. The 'barn' that I finally put my foot down and said, "No more. We're building a real house."

Anyway, there's now a skylight in the bathroom, four of these large window openings with incredible views and more windows to come in the kitchen addtion. We've hired a guy named Russ who also happened to be one of the two men who build the house we're currently in. Franklin works with him when he can and we're hoping things should go somewhat quickly.

The Franklin & the calf photo is a story in itself. I was driving to knitting night last Wednesday when I saw a cow down in a friend's field. She looked dead so I called Franklin so he could call Jamie. It turns out Jamie was out of town. Franklin went down to check and found a mama cow trying to give birth to a too-large calf. He called Jake and another friend who was in town to celebrate her graduation from large-animal vet school showed up and they all worked to pull out the calf - not an easy job for mom, baby or humans. It was touch and go for a few days but now the calf is nursing on the mom and we hope all continues to go well.

The first two photos of the hairy beast must have been self-portraits taken by Jake the night he took the fat cornrow braids out of his hair. That's all the news from Fairview and the Sides that's fit to print -- for now

Spring Garden & Porch

This is the beautiful glass heart Walker got me for Mother's day from Fearington where he used to work. It reminds me of him because he's so kindhearted.
 The chicken pen.
 The garden in spring
The porch. I took this photos so I'd know where to put the things back onto the wall once we took them down to stain the house siding.

Here are a few more photos of the porch and the gardens.

Spring Garden 2008

The three-egg-a-day hens. Can't beat those Rhode Island Reds.

Hens & chicks of a different kind. It's been a relatively wet and cool spring which makes all spring-things happy, including the gardener.

Chickens Thumb Their Beaks at Ace

A few minutes ago, I was out checking the chicken pen when I saw the girls running crazily around fighting each other for some huge night crawler. Awfully big worm. Fit for the Guinness Book of World Records. Then I saw that it wasn't a worm but a ring neck snake almost a foot long and as wide as a pencil. I love ring necks - the ONLY snake I love, and got into the pen to get it out of their beaks. It took a bit of wrestling and at one point I thought it was dead but it was only playing possum. As it started heading for the door, I held the girls back and helped it along. They get enough kitchen scraps that I don't feel they're a bit deprived. Ace (the Airedale) has always been the snake-killer around here and truth be known, his prey are a bit lengthier and more venomous - copperheads, mostly. But he has to hand it to the chickens, if it wiggles, those girls are going for it.

Jake's graduation photos

Posted by Picasa
This is one of Jake's '08 graduation photos. He originally balked at the idea but finding the bow tie helped him get into it. He even began hamming it up by the time the photo shoot was winding down. It's on to UNCA to play soccer and room with Kai.

Second snow of the year

Hey there, family and friends. I'm just feeling my way around the blogdom thing, trying to figure out how this works. If you bear with me, I might just have regular entries and photos for you. The news around here is that we had a decent snow Thursday (17th) and we're expecting another little one tomorrow (19th). Franklin had to stay at his "home-away-from-home-motel" in Lake Junaluska Wednesday night to be sure he could get into work on Thursday.

In other news, Walker turned 21 on January 12th. (Erik turned 30 this past summer and Jake turns 18 in April). We won't mention the fact that Franklin turns the "big five o" in April, too. Well, let's see if this works. -Susan
